OR talk about it here Audience Comments For This Post

Wow. Is the author willing to defend this post? Will anyone challenge it?

5 Pt. Salt

Way too often, Christians view homosexuality far, far differently than God does.

In Scripture, the male prostitute, sodomite, and homosexual is described vividly and it tells us unequivocally how God views homosexuality and homosexuals themselves.

First, Deuteronomy 23:18 –

You shall not bring the hire of a harlot or the wages of a dog into the house of the Lord your God for any votive offering, for both of these are an abomination to the Lord your God.

Next, look at Revelation 22:14, 15 –

Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

I’m going to come back to these two verses later, but first I…

  1. Joel Taylor says:

I’d be happy to defend it.

  2. Reblogged this on Christop Clochard L and commented:

    Who will challenge this insanity?

  3. This is an awesome example of someone interpreting their holy text as they see fit.

We have to start any analysis of how the god of Abraham thinks of homosexuals by admitting that there is no chapter dedicated to the topic, no sermon per se, no special treatment. It is mentioned a couple of times in sometimes hazey ways so it’s possible to interpret the sparse passages in several ways. It is quite noticable that in the ten commandments, god never really had that sexual orientation talk with Moses so there is no commandment against homosexualilty and that in itself is telling. No matter how important the author thinks this topic is it was not important enough for YHWH to tell Moses about it… at least not the second time around.

The author of this post interprets several passages in an attempt to string them together to give them more weight. Quite pleasingly they chose Romans 1:27. If we read the context of that verse we find that it was god himself that made people go for the same sex activities among other things. Their crime, if you will, was the audacity to not worship YHWH. If you read the passage in Romans there is about a 90% overlap between the evil things people do and the description of many evangelical televangelists.

Romans 1 – God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

On a side note, there at the end Paul equates all these ‘evil’ acts and lumps homosexuality in with disobeying your parents, envy, lies, drama, and greed. All of these deserve the death penalty. Hell for eternity is not enough, they should be stoned to death – sort of fast tracked to hell.

Now this whole ‘burned out’ translation business is simply foolish. It does not give this meaning. It takes only a moment to see that ‘burned out’ in the sense we commonly use it today had no meaning when the bible was written and this would not be the correct translation.

ek (a preposition, written eks before a vowel) – properly, “out from and to” (the outcome); out from within. 1537 /ek (“out of”) is one of the most under-translated (and therefore mis-translated) Greek propositions – often being confined to the meaning “by.” 1537 (ek) has a two-layered meaning (“out from and to”) which makes it out-come oriented (out of the depths of the source and extending to its impact on the object).

G1572 ἐκκαίω ekkaiō ek-kah’-yo From G1537 and G2545; to inflame deeply: – burn. Lust:

Most translations of the word are said as burning desire or inflamed with lust. To translate it as the author has then try to build on that is just wrong. He applies the term to all of the people when the text applies it only to the men as subject. The phrase ‘burned out end of humanity’ is just wishful thinking.

    The Dueteronomy quote:
17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.
18 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the Lord thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the Lord thy God.
19 Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon usury:

Here the author is trying to equate temple prostitutes with homosexuality. This is wrong as temple prostitute and homosexual are NOT the same thing. The more modern and accurate NIV translates the passage this way, “No Israelite, man or woman, is to become a shrine prostitute.”

The euphemism of dog for male temple prostitute does in NO WAY mean that YHWH thinks they are not human. In the Revelations quote we see the word dog used again and it is the temple prostitutes who are a separate category from the sexually immoral. Clearly the meaning of the word dog here is not a form of sexual immorality, rather it is something else: temple prostitute/dancer et al.

15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

What we end up with here is several assertions by the author to condemn homosexuality by using references to things other than homosexuality. This is not how YHWH sees homosexuality, it’s how he sees many other forms of what YHWH calls sin. Oh, and on the very rare occassion the book does say homosexuality is a sin and capital crime against god… along with working on Sunday, disobeying parents, and others.

The take away is that homosexuality is just as bad as disobeying your parents or working on Sunday. Thanks to this author we now know for certain that the god of Abraham hates sinners, not just the sin. You know it’s true because this author said so.
